Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Livramento (or São Lázaro)

A small hermitage chapel of late medieval origin, located on the left bank of the Gilão and on the edge of the town centre

Originally dedicated to Saint Lazarus, invoked as a protector against plagues and epidemics, from the end of the 17th century onwards it became better known by its invocation to our Lady of Deliverance, a cult mainly promoted by seafarers. At the beginning of the 18th century, its façade was remodelled and the date 1715 is inscribed on the lintel of the portal.
The hermitage chapel consists of a single nave, chancel and sacristy, which are all vaulted. Inside, the altarpiece, the rock statue of the patron saint (where tradition has it that it was found at sea) and the votive offerings hanging on the walls bear witness to the Chapel’s connection to seafarers.
