Barril beach
Barril beach is located roughly in the middle of Tavira Island on a narrow tongue of fine white sand.
This is a pleasant spot where it is worth observing the fauna, especially the cava-terra, a species of fiddler crab which is characteristic of these areas. The vegetation of the extensive dune fields is also noteworthy. It gives off a smell which is remarkably similar to curry, stemming from a small plant called perpétua-das-areias or Mediterranean strawflower (Helichrysum stoechas).
The beach support facility was once an old tuna fishing complex. Here one can see the original houses and some objects from this activity, as well as the well-known “cemetery” of anchors, which are laid out around the beach.
Praia do Barril is one of the beaches in Tavira that attracts many visitors, and so it is easy to reach.
