Church of Nossa Senhora da Saúde

The history of the church of Nossa Senhora da Saúde, in São Marcos, north of Tavira, dates back to the 15th century and is linked with that of the convent of São Paulo

In 1458, the Hermits of Saint Paul set up a convent here. They remained there until the 17th century, when they moved to the city and built a new house in Alagoa. The Paulistas remained in possession of the chapel until 1834, when it was acquired by the Brotherhood of Senhora da Saúde and became known as such.
The building consists of a single nave and chancel, covered by a dome topped by a lantern. The interior is characterised by the Manueline chancel arch, the rococo altarpiece and its eighteenth-century figurative tile panels.
