Walls of Tavira
The origins of the medieval fortifications formed by the current castle and walls of Tavira (including its towers and gates) date back to the Islamic period (11th century). However, by the end of the Middle Ages, these structures had been remodelled a number of times. Despite their degradation (due to the loss of their defensive effectiveness), what remains of these former military structures occupies a prominent position in Tavira’s urban landscape.
In addition to the castle itself, perched on top of Santa Maria hill and consisting of a trapezoidal bastion with corner towers (nowadays, with a garden inside), at different points in the historic centre, among the houses built at a later date, it is still possible to see towers and sections of the old walls.
This is a solid wall up to 9.5 metres in thickness.
