Vila a dentro Around the Inner Town

Tavira’s history is lost in time. Excavations on the “genetic hill” indicate the presence of Phoenicians and other ancient peoples. Between the 8th and 13th centuries Tavira was dominated by the Arabs until its conquest in 1242 by the Knights of the Order of Santiago commanded by D. Paio Peres Correia. After being granted a new charter in 1504 by King Manuel I, he elevated it to a town in 1520. In the 16th century it was the Algarve’s main commercial port and population center. A city of many churches and convents, full of nooks and crannies, crossed by a river, Tavira allows you to travel through time in the tranquillity of a mild climate.
