Gastronomy
Tavira’s gastronomy is a symphony of flavours which are intertwined with the region’s history and social and geographical characteristics, and is noteworthy for its diversity and authenticity. In ancient times, Tavira was a fishing port of great importance, where the catching and processing of tuna was one of the main economic activities up until the middle of the 20th century.
In Tavira’s restaurants, seafood such as tuna, octopus, razor clams, anchovies and squid form the centrepieces of our gastronomy. However, the flavours of the mountains and the Barrocal region also play their part – game, stuffed sausages, fresh cheese, nuts (such as almonds, carobs and figs) and medronho and fig fruit brandies are essential elements of the gastronomic offer. This means there are plenty of options for where to eat in Tavira which are varied and complete, and you will always find a traditional menu.
