Gallery Palace / Municipal Museum

Classified as a monument of public interest

This space hosts exhibitions on the History and diversity of the municipality’s heritage, as well as new contemporary artistic expression. It forms the centrepiece of the Tavira Municipal Museum, which was inaugurated in 2001 to host exhibitions on the history and unique heritage of Tavira.
Dating back to the 16th century, the building’s structure preserves architectural elements of great patrimonial interest from the Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque periods. The courtyard features an interesting gallery of Renaissance arcades and is considered one of the most interesting of its kind in the country. Inside, some of the wooden ceilings of the characteristic scissor roofs (or trusses) type still show traces of decorative painting. The current building was built in the mid-18th century at the initiative of the judge João Leal da Gama e Ataíde and is classified as a monument of public interest. The project was designed by the architect Diogo Tavares de Ataíde.
