Praça da República square
One of the most emblematic places in the city of Tavira, with its origins dating back to the expansion of the town beyond its old quarters and into new areas along the right bank of the Gilão river
It is also within Praça da República square that the Town Hall (the Paços do Concelho) is located. For centuries, this square was a centre of great commercial activity, with stalls and tents selling all kinds of products on a daily basis.
It received its current name (Republic Square) in 1910 to replace that of Praça da Constituição (Constitution Square) which it was given in 1822. It was previously known as Praça da Ribeira (Square by the Stream). At the centre of the square stands a monument which is dedicated to the soldiers of the Tavira regiment who died in combat during the Great War (1914-1918). Now that it has been the focus of urban renewal, the Praça da República square is also a favoured location for cultural shows and initiatives.
