Phoenician Ritual Wells
An archaeological point of reference in Tavira.
Current research hypothesises the existence of cults related to Phoenician deities at this site. Excavations carried out in the atrium of the Gallery Palace led to several “wells” being identified which were carved into the rock.
They were interpreted as being “Phoenician ritual wells” from the 7th-6th centuries BC, dedicated to the cult of the storm god Baal. As this god controlled the winds necessary for navigation, sailors worshipped him in order to obtain favourable conditions for their journeys.
