Old Bridge
The oldest of the bridges linking the banks of the River Gilão is perfect for crossing the river on foot
With its seven arches and an arched flooring, this monumental structure is over 80 metres long and around 6.5 metres wide. For a long time it was believed that this bridge was Roman in origin, but more recent studies have shown that it has only existed from the medieval period onwards.
This bridge underwent major construction work in the mid-17th century (c. 1655) but was partially destroyed by a violent flood in 1989. For centuries, this structure was the Algarve’s main connection point, linking the urban centres on the eastern Algarve coast by land. Today it is a pedestrian-only bridge.
