D. Manuel I Gate
This is one of the gates that provided openings in the ancient walls of Tavira to allow communication with the Vila-Adentro, the area within the medieval walls
This door, opening onto Praça da República, at the time known as Praça da Ribeira, was one of the town’s main commercial hubs, especially from the 15th century onwards.
The name is associated with the royal coat of arms of Portugal, flanked by armillary spheres, symbols generally associated with the reign of King Manuel I (1495-1521), which can be seen on one of its sides.
