Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Livramento (Our Lady of Deliverance)
A small Baroque-style building in a rural setting.
The chapel of Nossa Senhora do Livramento was founded in 1708 at the initiative of Father Manuel Viegas Leal, the curate of the parish of Luz. This chapel has two bell towers on the façade, a vaulted roof and a lantern.
The altarpiece in the chancel, with a classical design and which is made from stonework (marble, Algarvian breccia and limestone), which was commissioned by Dr Henrique Nunes Leal da Gama e Ataíde, nephew and heir of the founder, is a noteworthy example of the chapel’s interior.
There are also the armorial tombstones of the founder of the hermitage chapel and another member of the same family. At the beginning of the 20th century, the chapel of Nossa Senhora do Livramento was already referred to as a popular pilgrimage site, which was especially frequented by seafarers from the neighbouring town of Fuzeta.
