Atalaia Barracks
Built in 1795 by the Governor General of the Algarve, the Atalaia Barracks are one of the oldest in the country
Construction was started in the 18th century (1795), under the supervision of the then governor and captain-general of the Kingdom of the Algarve, the Count of Vale de Reis, who lived in Tavira at the time. The initiative to build these barracks was directly related to the need to accommodate the military contingent deployed to garrison the city of Tavira.
Probably designed by the military engineer José de Sande Vasconcelos, the barracks building is made up of four connected bodies forming a large rectangular Place of arms. The main façade, facing north and bounded by two large, fortified towers with mansard roofs, is dominated by the monumental Gate of Arms, surmounted by a commemorative epigraph, elliptical oculus and shield containing the Royal Coat of Arms.
