Álvaro de Campos Municipal Library

A tribute to the heteronym Álvaro de Campos, born in Tavira

The Tavira Municipal Library, which opened in 2006, was named Álvaro de Campos after one of the famous poet Fernando Pessoa’s heteronyms (1888-1935). According to the poet, Álvaro de Campos was born in Tavira. Located in the Atalaia neighbourhood, the library building is spacious and well equipped, with reading rooms, an auditorium and a bar. The building was adapted from the old civil prison, which was in use between 1916 and 1972.
Only the main façade of the old jail remains, which has been included in the structure of the new library. The space previously occupied by the cells has been transformed into a pleasant interior courtyard.
