Church of hospital do Espirito Santo ou São José
The origins of the Church of hospital do Espirito Santo ou São José, date back to the medieval period
On the same hill as the old convent of São Francisco, under the patronage of King Afonso V, the Hospital of the Holy Spirit was built in 1454 to receive the wounded of military or overseas expeditions. Of great interest in the church of this former hospice is a 16th century side chapel, located on the Gospel side, which remained intact even after the temple was rebuilt in 1752.
The chapel preserves a starry vault topped with five clasps showing coats of arms with the Melos and Costas arms. In addition to the decorative elements from this period, there is an interesting grille or vent, carved in stone, of the same type as the one we can admire in the chapel of Senhor dos Passos, in the church of Santa Maria do Castelo.
