Church of Mercy (Igreja da Misericórdia)
One of the most valuable Renaissance monuments in the Algarve
Built in the 16th century by master mason André Pilarte, the Church of Mercy is considered one of the finest works of the Algarvian Renaissance. The main portico is opened by a round arch surmounted by the image of Our Lady of Mercy, flanked by the apostles Saint Peter and Saint Paul and the royal and city coat of arms. Inside there are three 18th-century altarpieces.
Of particular note are the azulejo tile panels depicting the fourteen “Works of Mercy” and scenes from the life of Christ.
