Santa Maria do Castelo Church

The main church of the city of Tavira has an impressive history

The church of Santa Maria was likely built in the 13th century on the site of a former mosque from the Islamic period. The stations of the Way of the Cross, carved in stone and inscribed on the exterior walls, and a Gothic portico on the main façade can be seen at its entrance.
On the right-hand side of the chancel is the tomb of the seven knights who fell during the capture of the city and on the left-hand side is the alleged tomb of Dom Paio Peres Correia, master of the Order of Santiago, who led the conquest of Tavira. Inside, it is also possible inside to see the inscription “On Earth as it is in Heaven”.
