Former convent of Nossa Senhora da Graça

The former convent of Augustinian friars was founded in 1569 on the site of Tavira’s former Jewish quarter

This was one of the first buildings to show the change from the Renaissance to the “plain style”. This statement of a new, austere architectural taste is clearly evident in the stripping of the main elevation of the former church and the presence of a simple portico, not containing any decoration.
There is a clear contrast with the rest of the convent façade, which made up the former dormitory and incorporates more dynamic decorative forms, in the style of the 18th century Baroque. The interior cloister is formed by arches supported by Tuscan columns set on pedestals, reflecting the classical sobriety given to the building during its construction.
