Town Hall

With its main façade facing onto the Praça da República square, this is a building with Renaissance-style architectural features throughout its two-storey structure and arcades

In the centre of the Town Hall façade there is a stone with the old arms of the municipality of Tavira and, in the south-west corner, there is a stone with a scowl that locals identify as a representation of Dom Paio Peres Correia, the Master of the Order of Santiago who conquered the city from the Moors.
The Town Hall was previously located in other places, first inside the city walls and then at the top of what is now Rua da Liberdade street. This location was only decided upon around the middle of the 17th century (c. 1645). The current building is the result of a reconstruction carried out in the mid-20th century (c. 1954), which did not alter the volume and characteristics of the façade of the original building.
