Parish Church of Santiago
A mandatory stop on a tour of the history of Tavira, the church dates back to the 13th century
However, the original building was badly damaged by the 1755 earthquake and, around 1763, King José I ordered that the income from the brotherhoods founded in this church be used to finance its reconstruction.
The Parish Church of Santiago has a sober main façade with an expansive medallion depicting Santiago as a “Moor-killer”. The south façade is enlivened by the protruding volumes of the side chapels, sacristy and annexes, with their small domes and lanterns, which confer considerable dynamism to the building and make it particularly appealing. The interior of the church features carved altarpieces, images and sacred paintings from various periods, some from former religious buildings in the city.
