Parish Church of Luz de Tavira
A must-see for the history of Manueline art in the Algarve.
The parish church of Luz de Tavira is the only example of a hall church (the name given to churches with three naves covered by vaults that rise to the same height) in the Algarve region. The building, built in the mid-16th century, is thought to have resulted from the extension of the old Manueline parish church, and there are some architectural elements that form part of the current church, particularly the old projecting entrance (now placed on the side). Two neoclassical side altars fill the naves.
The interior houses an interesting collection of paintings, sculptures and carvings from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries.
