D’Aires Tower
A circular tower, about three metres high
The D’Aires Tower is made entirely of masonry. During the period of raids by Berber pirates from North Africa, it was part of an extensive coastline defence system that warned people of imminent danger through daytime smoke signals and night-time fires.
The name by which it is known was given to it due to its association with Aires Gonçalves, an individual who lived through the transition from the 16th to the 17th century and owned the land on which this tower stands.
