SAAL neighbourhood
Built by the population shortly after the Carnation Revolution (25 April 1974)
The S.A.A.L. Neighbourhood of Cabanas is one of the local examples of a housing development programme created in the aftermath of 25 April 1974. S.A.A.L. – Serviço de Apoio Ambulatório Local stands for “Local Ambulatory Support Service”, and lasted from 1974 until 1976. Nowadays, it is considered to be a key moment in the history of 20th century Portuguese architecture. The idea was to resolve the basic needs of a large section of the Portuguese population by helping them build their own homes in a spirit of unprecedented public involvement.
The history of this neighbourhood is also related to the seafaring experiences of a mostly fishing community.
