São João da Barra Fort

A fine example of bastioned architecture, the São João da Barra Fort was built in 1656, in the middle of the Portuguese Restoration War (1640-1668), at the initiative of the Count of Val de Reis, governor of the Algarve at the time.
Now privately owned, this is a bastioned fort with a walled enclosure and earthen platforms covered with a stone masonry top. It has a polygonal plan, with bastions at the four corners, served by ramps. Once past a moat, the front door faces inland.
